(d) Mature stems of woody plants have a peripheral water proof tissue called cork (phellem). A number of scars known as lenticels are found on the surface of cork. Lenticels allow the gaseous exchange between atmosphere and living cells below the cork and also take parts in transpiration (0.1 %). |
