Muharram 2021 Date | Islamic New Year Begin Will begin likely to be observed on  August 10th Tuesday 

  1. Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and is considered the second holiest month after Ramzan in Islamic calendar.

  2. This year, the Islamic new year, also know as the Hijri new year will fall in the second week of August 2021

  3. Authorities in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and other regions in the Middle East will determine the date for Muharram

  4. Muslims are, therefore, requested to start looking out for the new moon on Sunday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultan," he said.

  5. Muharram will begin in India and other parts of the world on August 10th only if the full moon is sighted on August 9th. If the full moon is not sighted today, Muharram will begin from August 11.

Muharram 2021 Significance

  1. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Muharram is one of the four sacred months overall that are mentioned in the Quran.

  2. The other three sacred months include the seventh month of Rajab, the eleventh month of Dhul-Qadah and the twelfth month of Dhul-Hijjah.

  3. The Islamic New Year is based on the lunar system, while the Gregorian New Year is based on the solar system. The Islamic Hijri months have either 29 or 30 days.

  4. The Islamic New Year began in 622 AD with the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina, as per Islamic Mythology.

  5. This is why Islamic Year 2021 will be considered as Hijri 1443 AH. 

  6. Many countries including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia declare a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic Year. 

  7. The first 10 days of the holy month of Muharram are considered to be extremely important, as, during this period, Muslims mourn the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Husayn Ibn Ali al-Hussein, who died at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
